After more than 30 years in radio, Terri Avery, Director of Branding and Programming for Atlanta’s KISS 104.1 (WALR-FM), announces she is to retire at the end of the year.
Avery joined the Cox Media Group (CMG) family in January of 2019 after successful stints in various markets across the country including Texas, Maryland and North Carolina.
Avery played a crucial role in organizing Black Radio United for the Vote, a means to mobilize black voters to the voting booths. At the 2023 Gabby Awards the GAB recognized Avery and her colleagues, awarding “Black Radio United for the Vote,” with the 2023 Broadcaster(s) of the Year award.
In 2023, Avery was inducted into the Black Radio Hall of Fame as a “Talented Sister of Radio.”
“I’ve been all around the country in this wonderful career called radio,” says Avery in a press release announcing her retirement. “I’ve worked with some great people and had a lot of FUN! I want to thank my staff of great air personalities, the managers and executive team at CMG for making my last stop one of the best stops.”
According to the press release, Avery has led KISS 104.1 to earn two Marconi Awards, various Gabby Awards and a 2021 Service to America Award Nomination.
“The decision to retire did not come easily. After devoting 38 years to it [radio], I felt it was time to leave the radio business to enjoy what this business robs you of when you’re busy building a career in it…TIME,” says Avery. “There are family members that I have, who have started their own families that I haven’t seen yet. There are places around the world I want to travel too. But, most importantly I want time to just enjoy the simple things in life.”
The GAB wishes Avery a well-deserved retirement and time to enjoy those little things in life.
“Avery’s last day with Cox Media Group will be December 31, 2023. As the search for the next Director of Branding and Programming for KISS 104.1 commences, prospective candidates are invited to connect with Emily Boldon at Emily.Boldon@CMG.com for additional details about this opportunity,” says the press release.
