Welcome Asya McDonald and Hannah Osborne!
The Georgia Association of Broadcasters is thrilled to announce that we have accepted two wonderful summer interns. Please help us in welcoming Asya McDonald from the University of Georgia and Hannah Osborne from Piedmont College!
Hi, I’m Asya McDonald! I am a current senior pursuing disciplines in pre-law and journalism with a minor in Spanish. I am originally from Orlando, Florida. However, I am currently living in Georgia while attending university. While at the Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication, I am learning about the Athens community by interviewing local musicians, churches, restaurants and business owners. My discipline in journalism happens to be video journalism, so I like to document the process of my subjects during my assignments to broadcast the most authentic version of themselves on my website.
My favorite project to date has been the work I have done on the assignment for Covering Poverty. Covering Poverty is a program by the University of Georgia Journalism Writing Lab that gives students training on how to write stories about people and poverty-related matters. I had a lot of fun with this project and was able to really immerse myself in the topic! I liked that during this internship I was out of my comfort zone in a subject that I did not have much knowledge about prior and was able to get published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
When I am not in class, I volunteer with the campus organization Speak Out For Species to advocate for animal rights and a vegan lifestyle, write articles for the UGA HerCampus, do outreach with my church, sew clothing, and hang out with my friends.
I am also a digital content creator with a mass following of over 150,000 followers on my various platforms who have recently registered my media company, Caution District Inc as a business. I produced lifestyle, fashion, travel, and activism content on my website, Caution District. To further my passion for fighting injustice globally, I learned how to sew and launched Caution District Threads, my sustainable fashion shop, to bring awareness about ethical and slow fashion practices during the pandemic.
I create content on my platforms because I believe in education, transparency, and inspiring my audience to live their full potential, not conform to society’s standards. I aspire to be a positive influence here to get it right through my content, not to be right.
After college, I plan to use the skills I learned in higher education and internships to further my entrepreneurial efforts and seize every opportunity to live out the life I imagine!
My name is Hannah Osborne, a recent graduate of Piedmont University. During my time at Piedmont, I studied mass communications with a minor in theatre arts. I have lived in Georgia my whole life, growing up in Dawsonville, GA, and receiving my high school diploma in 2020. While in high school I dedicated the majority of my time to theatre productions. My love of these productions, combined with my longtime love of writing and the advice of a trusted mentor, lead me to pursue a path in mass communications at Piedmont University.
At Piedmont, I was provided with an education in various fields of communications, including radio broadcasting, scriptwriting, journalism, advertising & public relations, and communications law. Highlights of my time at Piedmont include serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the student-run newspaper The Roar, creating short films, constructing a marketing package for a local business, and learning the ins and outs of the broadcasting industry. As the Editor-in-Chief I had a variety of responsibilities, my favorite of these includes leading meetings and editing the final print editions.
Upon the completion of my degree, I completed a senior capstone project titled “The
Intersections of Media, Politics, and Cancel Culture.” Aspects of this project included a podcast
series, news articles, blog posts, and a promotional package. This project combined my passion for journalism and media with my passion for politics, challenging me to improve as a journalist and media professional.
Outside of my professional life I enjoy reading, cooking, socializing, and attending concerts. I have recently taken an interest in photography, both journalistic and otherwise. I grew up with six siblings, and currently have three nephews and a niece! I also have a cat named Violet. Previously I have served as an Election Stringer for the Associated Press. I am excited to join the Georgia Association of Broadcasters team this summer as a summer intern and receive valuable first-hand experience in the world of broadcasting.
