Position Summary In 2017, the Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Georgia (UGA) established a goal to create a truly distinctive, integrated student agency known as Talking Dog Agency in its Department of Advertising and Public Relations. To ensure the long-range success of the firm, a number of steps have been taken to refine the agency model, build ownership and commitment among key audiences, and create a strong foundation that will attract donors, prospective clients, faculty and top students. With the integrated student agency model now established, UGA is seeking a visionary leader for the position of Advisor and Business Manager.
Reporting to the Department Head, Advertising and Public Relations, at UGA, the Advisor will have oversight for the integrated student agency led by two student co-directors, a student executive board, and staffed by approximately 80 students each academic year. The Advisor will serve as champion for the new convergent communication model, articulating the vision and mission of the student agency to various stakeholders within the University as well as community and industry partners outside the University.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies The ideal candidate will have a proven record of teaching/mentoring, collaborating, critical thinking, managing diverse teams, and recruiting and retaining business clients. They will be adept at mastering change, fostering an environment where students can learn by failing safely, motivating students to use their instincts, developing agency policies and practices, and teaching business development and client service skills. They will be consultative, curious, innovative and at ease working in an academic environment. Importantly, they will be comfortable leading efforts to secure new agency clients, gifts to the University, and other external funding.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Manages office work flow.
  • Coordinate Student Executive Board meetings.
  • Order and maintain any necessary supplies and equipment for the Agency.
  • Field and direct as necessary any internal and external requests for work and presentations.
  • Recruit and interact with Agency clients and donors.
  • Work with the Student Executive Board to recruit and maintain a roster of paying clients for Talking Dog Agency
    (minimum 12 per year with minimum income of $125,000 annually).
  • Work with the Student Executive Board to recruit and maintain a roster of pro bono clients for Talking Dog Agency (minimum 4 per year).
  • Recruit and consult, at least quarterly, an external board of professionals as informal consultants.
  • Liaise with the Grady Business Office and Development personnel.
  • Invoice and collect for work done.
  • In collaboration with the Student Executive Board, develop policies and activities to build and maintain a collegial agency culture.
  • In collaboration with the Department Head, develop an annual budget for the Agency.
  • As necessary, liaise with the Department of Legal Affairs, in coordination with Department Head.
  • Additional tasks as assigned by Department Head.

Duties/Responsibilities Student Duties

  • Daily connection between the Department and students working in the Agency.
  • Work with Department Head on external outreach.
  • Serve as a Department representative to the professional community of advertising and public relations in Atlanta and beyond.
  • Work together with faculty adviser/s to ensure quality control of Agency output.
  • Develop and implement growth strategies for the Agency.
  • Minimum number of students = 80, Preferred size = 120.
  • Maintain rough equity between number of advertising and public relations majors.
  • Work with Student Executive Board to recruit students in a variety of settings (e.g., AdClub, PRSSA, classes, AdPR Connection, Grady Career Fair)
  • Supervising students.
  • As necessary, recruit and match students and professional mentors.
  • Each Student Executive Board member should have the opportunity for a professional mentor.
  • Work with Student Executive Board to assign student/s to client projects.
  • Connect with every student at least once a week to monitor work.
  • Preview and coach all presentations for clients or donors.
  • Inspect layouts and advertising copy and edit scripts, audio and video tapes, and other promotional material for adherence to specifications.
  • Meet regularly with the Student Executive Board of the Agency as ex officio member of the Board.
  • Serve as supervisor of for-credit interns, reporting to instructor/s of record.
  • Work with Student Executive Board to identify and recruit prospective student agency members.
  • Develop, propose and implement student compensation models (e.g., class credit, experiential learning credit, stipend, etc.).
  • Work with Student Executive Board and Department to recruit and supervise high school student interns (maximum of 5 per Athens-Clarke and Oconee area high schools, public or private).
  • Manage annual Battle of the Brands event.
  • During the Fall semester, identify and secure a Spring semester presentation location in collaboration with the Student Executive Board and the Department.
  • Procure and coordinate all technology needs for the event.
  • Invite clients, donors, prospects to the event.
  • Together with Student Executive Board, arrange for any setup and teardown of presentation location.
  • Together with Student Executive Board, arrange for any refreshments.
  • Preview and coach all student presentations.
  • Develop and manage a method of live-streaming and recording the event.
  • Coordinate editing of the event recording.
  • Distribute the digital recording to client and/or donor prospects.
  • Additional tasks as assigned by Department Head.
