FOX Television Stations owns and operates 29 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S. These include stations located in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas, or DMAs, and duopolies in 11 DMAs, including the three largest DMAs (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). Of these stations, 18 are affiliated with the FOX Network. In addition to distributing sports, entertainment and syndicated content, our television stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news every week. These stations leverage viewer, distributor and advertiser demand for the FOX Network’s national content.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Assignment Editor is multi-functional with responsibilities and skills in different areas. The position requires researching, developing, and gathering news leads and stories for newscasts from the newsroom’s assignment desk or digital center. Must be able to quickly adapt and respond to rapidly changing and breaking news stories. Writing skills are essential as position must be able to write and publish stories on the station’s website and social media outlets. Stays up to date on news events and topics of interest to viewers. Develops contacts across government, law enforcement and business communities as well as developing local community contacts to generate exclusive stories and follow-ups. Monitors social media and scanners for breaking news and makes decisions on coverage and best use of resources. Develops plans for coverage of scheduled news events including assignment of personnel, equipment and other logistical concerns. Provides frequent, concise and effective communication to staff. Assigns, dispatches, and coordinates reporter/photojournalist news teams, as well as live remote crews and LNS helicopter. Discusses the development and progress of news stories with newscast producers, technological support staff, and news managers. Monitors competing news websites and social media sites for story ideas and developments. Receives, evaluates and responds to news tips from viewers and others received by phone, email or social media messages.
Requirements: Must be able to work a flexible schedule as news events and staffing require.
Ability to prioritize and work under daily deadline pressure. Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot. Excellent communication/organizational skills. Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred. Minimum two years of experience in a commercial newsroom. Previous assignment desk experience required.
