Three Atlanta stations received recognition last Tuesday evening, June 4, in Washington D.C.
Recognized for its Acts of Love campaign, Salem Media Group’s 104.7 The Fish received the Service to Community Award for Radio Large Market. The Acts of Love campaign began in 2006 as a way to support Atlantans celebrate the Christmas season through donations made by listeners. Since then, the station has expanded this campaign to take place year round in acts of generosity known as “ACTS OF LOVE.” According to The Fish’s website, “ACTS OF LOVE is all about neighbors helping neighbors.”
Gray Television’s Atlanta News First received the Service to Community Award for Television Large Market for the station’s investigative series “In Plane Sight.” The investigative series takes a look at Atlanta’s airport procedures, which saw racial profiling and DEA agents unlawfully seizing money from passengers. The series has led to House Resolution 1525, known as the FAIR Act, which has 18 cosponsors and bipartisan support in reaching the House floor.
Georgia Congresswoman Nikema Williams presented the station with its award.
WSB-TV’s Channel 2 also played a role in Cox Media Group reception of Service to Community Award for Television Ownership Group. CMG Group received this award for its investigation into a national real estate business that exposed the company for preying on vulnerable homeowners and swindling them out of their home equity.
Since joining the station in 1990, Mike Oates has been a steadfast of the WRDW/WAGT community in Augusta. Now, after 34 years with the station, Oates is stepping into retirement.
To celebrate the bittersweet occasion, Oates joined WRDW’s Mix at 3 segment to be sent off in style. Native Augustan, Joe Stevenson performed “I’m a Singer Songwriter” to “play Mike out.”
Oates has been succeeded by Greg Connor.
WJBF says farewell to longtime journalist, photographer and editor, Mike “Lud” Ludwikowski, as he enters retirement.
Since he first joined the station nearly 40 years ago, Lud has dedicated his career to serving the Columbus community. NewsChannel 6 will dearly miss the value that Lud brought to the newsroom as a journalist, a teacher and a friend.
The station wishes him well as he enters this next chapter of life.
American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC) and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital announced Atlanta News First as its St. Jude Dream Home TV Station of the Year. Atlanta News First participated in the Dream Home Giveaway for the first time in 2023, selling 15,000 tickets and raising $1.5 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In 2024, the station aims to sell 20,000 tickets to benefit the organization.
The station will be honored at the ALSAC Volunteer Awards Dinner in Memphis, TN, in July.
In its relentless dedication to bringing local sports coverage to the homes of Georgians, Peachtree Sports Network has added the coverage of 13 Gwinnett Stripers games to its line-up. For the first time in 10 years, fans can enjoy the Gwinnett Stripers from the comfort of their own home through Peachtree Sports Network.
Announcing the games will be the Stripers’ play-by-play team of lead broadcaster Dave Lezotte and broadcast assistant Jack Johnson.
