The Sheriff’s Award of Excellence is awarded twice a year by Chatham County’s Sheriff Wilcher, who selects recipients based on their contribution to community safety and well-being.
“We try to recognize people in the community who do an outstanding job for everybody in the community, not just themselves,” Wilcher shares with WSAV.
Tyus-Shaw is one of seven honorees who were selected to receive the honor. She stood out to Sheriff Wilcher largely due to her participation and assistance during Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Tyus-Shaw has expressed how much this honor means to her.
“It means a lot when people recognize your work, but I really don’t look for any accolades. I just do what I was born to do, to serve and be a light in our community, and I enjoy it,” Tyus-Shaw shared on air.
