The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act took an important step forward this week, advancing out of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce with overwhelming bipartisan backing. The legislation would require automakers to include AM radio as standard equipment in all new vehicles, including electric models, citing the platform’s vital role in public safety and emergency communications.
Backed by more than 300 members of the House of Representatives and 61 U.S. Senators, the bill recognizes AM radio as a critical public service and reliable source of emergency alerts. To secure continued progress, lawmakers adopted an amendment reducing the bill’s enforcement window from ten years to eight, requiring Congress to revisit the measure in 2033.
If enacted in 2025, the Department of Transportation would issue implementing rules in 2026. Compliance deadlines would follow a staggered schedule, with larger automakers required to meet the standard by 2028, mid-size manufacturers by 2029, and smaller manufacturers by 2030–2031.
