2014 Lanny Finch GAB Scholarship Application Deadline Is May 9

If you know of a hard working rising junior or senior level college student studying broadcasting, let them know about the E. Lanier “Lanny” Finch Broadcasting Scholarship.  If they apply and qualify, they could receive $1,500 from GAB for use towards their education.  GAB wants to emphasize that member station employees, colleagues, or relatives are eligible, so long as they meet the requirements for the scholarship.  The deadline to apply is May 9.  Scholarships will be awarded on GAB Honors Night on June 6 in Atlanta.  For more information and a scholarship application, click on the documents below:

GAB Honors Night Friday June 6 In Atlanta Save The Date

Save the date—Friday, June 6 join your colleagues from around the state for the annual GAB Honors Night including the GABBY Awards for Georgia Broadcast Excellence. GAB Honors Night returns to GPB in Midtown Atlanta for a streamlined event that will include food, beverage, and live entertainment from BMI Recording Artist Jesse Rice, hit songwriter for Georgia Florida Line.

Thanks to everyone who joined GAB in welcoming our 2014 inductees into the Georgia Association of Broadcasting Hall of Fame in Athens March 5.  Paul Beliveau, Bill Cathcart, and John Pruitt represent the very best of our state in front of the camera, behind the scenes, and on the bottom line.  Each in their own way make each of us proud to be a Georgia Broadcaster!

GAB will induct three new members into our Hall of Fame at a luncheon at our Winter Institute in Athens on Wednesday, March 5.

Paul Beliveau is Director of Information and Public Relations for the Georgia Farm Bureau.  He has been a radio and TV broadcaster and producer for fifty years. He began as a Top 40 DJ which led to a career as a journalist, TV news anchor, news director and director of operations in radio and television from New England to Puerto Rico to Georgia.  He worked as a news director and executive at WMAZ Radio and TV in Macon for 15 years before joining the Georgia Farm Bureau in 1985.  He has been the voice and face of the Georgia Farm Bureau Radio and TV network for decades.  He is co-anchor and executive producer of the Georgia Farm Monitor TV program. Paul helped create a cooperative advertising program that matched up local insurance agents and broadcasters that continues to place local revenue at radio and television stations across the state decades after it was established. Paul has served on the GAB Board representing associate members for the past 25 years.

GAB Hall of Fame 2014 Inductee John Pruitt, WSB-WXIA Atlanta

GAB will induct three new members into our Hall of Fame at a luncheon at our Winter Institute in Athens on Wednesday, March 5.

John Pruitt worked as a news reporter and anchor in Atlanta for 43 years for WSB TV and WXIA-TV. John has covered nearly every major story affecting Georgians from the civil rights era to contemporary Atlanta. He has won ten Emmys, five Sigma Delta Chi Quill Awards; the UPI Award for his coverage of Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign and coverage of a north Georgia airliner crash; the Georgia Winner Award for Public Service; Father of the Year, Pioneer Broadcaster Award from the University of Georgia Grady College; the Silver Circle Award from the National Academy of Radio Arts and Sciences; an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Service from Presbyterian College (2004) and the Distinguished Achievement in Broadcasting Award from Di Gamma Kappa at University of Georgia School of Journalism (2006).

GAB Hall of Fame 2014 Inductee Bill Cathcart, WTOC Savannah

GAB will induct three new members into our Hall of Fame at a luncheon at our Winter Institute in Athens March 5.

Bill has been part of WTOC TV Savannah for 28 years, the last 23 as General Manager. For 15 years he has written and presented on-air editorials after most weekday newscasts, making him of the most recognized and respected broadcasters in Savannah. He has servedon the boards of dozens of organizations, most as Chairman, and he recently completed his service on the GAB Board.

Bill earned his PhD at Ohio State and  spent ten years as a college professor and worked at television and radio stations in Ohio and Minnesota before coming to Savannah. John
Wetherbee and the WTOC management team nominated Bill.

2014 GABBY Awards Call For Entries

The Georgia Association of Broadcasters announces our call for entries for the 2014 GABBY Awards For Excellence In Georgia Broadcasting.  Awards will be given in radio and in television.

Just as last year, the entire GABBY entry and judging process will be conducted online, using the Best In Media platform.  You will upload audio, video and .pdf files to the GABBY section of this website.

If you are accustomed to doing business online, you should have no trouble submitting for a GABBY Award.

In recognition of the continued support of GAB member stations with regards to clearing our PEP spots on radio and television, GAB is waiving any entry fees for the GABBY Awards.  There is no cost for entry.

We are continuing the new awards we began last year, including ‘new media’ categories encompassing your efforts on the web, across multiple platforms, and via social networks.

All material submitted(except for entries in new categories) has to have aired on your station from January 1, 2013-December 31, 2013.  All entries must be submitted by Tue April 1, 2013.

GABBY Awards will be handed out and acknowledged as part of the GAB Honors Night Program.  More information will be forthcoming about GAB Honors Night date, time and location.

GAB Hall of Fame Induction Returns To Winter Broadcast Institute

gab logo jpeg tweakThe Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame Induction moves from GAB Honors Night back to its original home at the GAB-UGA Winter Broadcast Institute.  The GAB Hall of Fame Induction will take place at the Institute luncheon at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.  For more information about this event give GAB a call at 770-395-7200.

The Georgia Association of Broadcasters acknowledges our state and industry leaders with the yearly Georgian of The Year, Broadcaster of The Year, and Broadcasting Hall of Fame awards.

We also recognize excellence in our state’s radio and television industry with the annual Gabby Awards.

The E. Lanier Finch Scholarship is awarded to outstanding Georgia high school students who plan to make a career in broadcasting.

GAB’s leadership flows from of our 22 member Board of Directors to our executive staff in Atlanta, led by veteran broadcaster and executive Bob Houghton and our emeritus members.
